Welcome to the SEIWA website Minimize

The Southeastern Isolated Wetlands Assessment involves a three-level strategy.  At the geodatabase evaluation and sampling design level (Level 1), we will evaluate the existing geodata and remote sensing imagery and develop an initial population frame, based on combined geodatabases, that contains the location of potential isolated wetlands in the North Carolina/South Carolina Study Area. Using this population frame, we will propose a probabilistic sampling design that will be used to assess map accuracy, the number and extent of isolated wetlands, the pollution absorption capacity of isolated wetlands, and the cumulative effects of lots of isolated wetlands. We will conduct rapid assessments (Level 2) to collect data to evaluate the accuracy of the initial population frame and to estimate the number and extent of isolated wetlands; the condition of isolated wetlands; and the rate of destruction, modification, and conversion of isolated wetlands within the population framework. Finally, we will conduct intensive assessments (Level 3) of selected wetlands and watersheds to help develop methods for pollutant absorption capacity and cumulative effects of isolated wetland loss and degradation.
